WAC MVP and MIP Awards

Now at the end of our season, the Washington College Sailing handed out its Most Valuable and Most Improved Player Awards.

Carl Horrocks was awarded the MVP Award for the Varsity Sailing Team for this past year, making it the third time Carl has won the award. Carl, also the team's captain, was the mainstay of WAC's performance for the entire year and now he has graduated (Congrats Carl) he will be missed. Carl was also awarded the The Thomas Reeder Spedden Medal, presented to a male and female student for academic standing and achievement in athletics, by the WAC Athletic Department.

Shri Puri was awarded the MIP Award for the Varsity Sailing Team for her improvement over the past year. Shri joined the team having never sailed a small boat and by the end of this spring season was the starting crew for our A Division boat. Shri, only a sohomore, will surely be a large fctor in the future performance of the WAC Sailing Team.

WAC 5th at Conference Championship

The Washington College sailing team equaled their highest finished of fifth of 18 schools at the America Trophy, the MAISA Spring Co-Ed Dinghy Championships, April 29-30 hosted by ODU.

Senior skipper Carl Horrocks and sophomore crews Shri Puri and Alex Starks finished seventh in A Division for Washington, while sophomore skipper Alex Hood and freshman crew Derek Packard and sophomore crew Meredith Dodd were fifth in B Division. WC finished in the top three in four of the final races in B Division.

WAC was a mere 10 points short of qualifying for the ICSA Co-Ed Dinghy National Championship for the first time. Since the team is still young, the future looks bright for the WAC sailors.

Winds on Saturday were 12-22 knots out of the north-northeast in the morning and east-northeast for most of the afternoon shifting back to northeast at the end of the day. A Division completed 10 races on Saturday, while B Division finished eight races. Winds on Sunday were 15-25 knots. Five A Division and seven B Division races were sailed on Sunday.

WAC Goes Offshore at the Kennedy Cup

The Washington College sailing team finished sixth of 10 teams at the Kennedy Cup, an offshore regatta hosted by Navy, April 21-23. Sophomore skipper Parker Mitchell, along with his crew, sophomore Alex Hood, senior Carl Horrocks, sophomore Oliver Barnyak, sophomore Chase Hillyer, freshman Seth Olson, sophomore Meredith Dodd, and senior Tyler Raven sailed for Washington at the Kennedy Cup.

The WAC Crew sailed very well as a team in their first Kennedy Cup in school history, laying the future for other crews to sail in the big boats at Navy. There will certainly be other offshore events for Washington College Sailing. A special thank you goes out to Ben Mitchell, Parker's Dad, for helping coach the team before and during the Kennedy Cup.

St. Mary's Open

The Washington College sailing team finished third of 14 schools at the MAISA Open, hosted by St. Mary's. At the MAISA Open, freshman skipper Nick Larmore and sophomore crew Tonie Domino finished third in A Division, while freshman skipper Derek Packard and sophomore crew Meredith Bluefeld were fourth in B Division.

Admiral's Cup and Arrigan Memorial

The Washington College sailing team finished 16th of 18 teams at the Admiral's Cup, an intersectional hosted by Kings Point, this weekend and sixth of 16 teams at the Arrigan Memorial, hosted by Georgetown.

Senior skipper Carl Horrocks and sophomore crew Shri Puri finished 13th in A Division at the Admiral's Cup, while sophomore skipper Alex Hood and freshman crew Derek Packard were 14th in B Division and sophomore Chase Hillyer was 18th in C Division. Freshman skipper Nick Larmore and sophomore crew Meredith Bluefeld finished fifth in A Division at the Arrigan Memorial, while freshman skipper Seth Olson and sophomore crew Tonie Domino were sixth in B Division.

WAC Spring Women's

The Washington College sailing team finished third of seven teams in the Washington College Women's Open April 8-9. At the Washington College Women's Open, sophomore skipper Meredith Dodd and sophomore crew Tonie Domino finished second for Washington in A Division. Sophomore skipper Meredith Bluefeld and freshman crew Jenn Tonks were third in B Division.

WAC Sailing Shows Off New Bibs!

Last weekend, April 1-2, 2006, had Washington College Sailing Team Members wearing their new Sailing Team Bibs. These Bibs will now be worn at all regattas attended by the Washington College Sailing Team. Very Cool!

North Series #1 @ Kings Point

The Washington College sailing team finished 7th of 20 teams at the North Series #1 held April 1-2, 2006 at Kings Point USMMA. The team finsished strong after a slow start and took away many lessons they will use for future regattas. Sophomore skipper Alex Hood sailed to a fourth-place finish in A Division with sophomore crew Alexandria Starks and and freshman crew Derek Packard. Starks and Packard also shared crew duties in B Division as freshman Nick Larmore skippered Washington to a ninth-place finish in that Division.

Saturday's races began in a 10 mile per hour breeze from the south which escalated to a 45 miles per hour due to a cold front from the west and then died to a 0-8 mph zephyr from the north. Sunday's races were sailed under clear sunny skies, with temperatures in the 70s and a 4-12 mph breeze from the north.

WAC Wins @ Toms River, NJ

The Washington College sailing team finished first of 18 teams at the Ocean County Spring Open held April 1-2, 2006. Washington finished the regatta with 119 total points, outdistancing second-place Christopher Newport by 50 points.

Senior skipper Carl Horrocks and sophomore crew Shri Puri took first place in A Division at the Ocean County Spring Open in dominating fashion, winning 13 of the division's 18 races to win the division by 58 points. Sophomore skipper Meredith Dodd and sophomore crew Tonie Domino were second in B Division, finishing in the top five in 11 of the division's 18 races.

UMBC Open @ Baltimore Inner Harbor

Washington College (pre-qualified) placed third at the UMBC Spring Open, consistently finishing races in the top 5 in both divisions. A Division skipper Nick Larmore (09) and crew Meredith Bluefeld set the tone on Saturday with several top 3 finishes. B Division skipper Meredith Dodd (08) and crew Tonie Domino (08) posted several bullets over both days, edging out UPenn for second place in their division. Seth Olson (09) stepped in on Sunday to skipper A Division for Nick, who went to Navy to sail D Division in place of Parker Mitchell (08), injured in Saturday's racing. Seth not only held off 4th place Drexel, but helped put WAC nearly 100 points ahead, for a decisive overall finish.

Truxtun Umsted @ Navy 2006

The Washington College sailing team finished 17th of 20 teams at the Truxtun Umsted, a co-ed intersectional regatta hosted by Navy. At the Truxtun Umsted, senior skipper Carl Horrocks and freshman crew Derek Packard finished 12th in A Division. Sophomore skipper Alex Hood and freshman crew Colleen Kelly were eighth in B Division. Sophomore Chase Hillyer was 18th in C Division, while sophomore Parker Mitchell and Nick Larmore sailed for Washington in D Division and placed 17th.

Traditionally Washignton College has struggled in 4 division events and a score we keep in house is our performance in the two dinghy divisions, A and B. In the two dinghy divisions WAC finsihed 10th of the 20 teams (3rd MAISA Team), a very respectable finish. The team also feels it has plenty of room for improvement later this season.

Unfortunately for WAC Sailing, Parker Mitchell sustained an injury to his left knee on Saturday and will probably miss the remainder of the Spring Season. Parker will accompany the team to several events acting as an assistant coach and helping the other sailors at those events.

Team Workouts

I think the idea of a team workout twice a week is a really great idea. I know even thinking about getting up and going to the gym at 7 am is hard but once you get there your feel so good. I think those days are good and the break in the middle is nice. Think about it for Tuesday!
